Non toxic teething rings for quick relief

Your baby, who used to be so sweet and adorable, has suddenly turned in to a fussy, drooling, irritable, crying and non-sleeping baby.

There’s no mistaking.

Your baby is teething.

Teething typically starts around age 4-6 months, and it’s not fun at all. Not for you and definitely not for your poor baby.

A baby who’s teething usually starts putting everything, and I mean everything in their mouth in an attempt to get some relief.

Teething toys are a great way to soothe your baby’s aching gum and it will save your baby’s fingers (and yours!) from those sharp bites.

There’s a lot of cool teething toys on the market. Some are cheap, some expensive, some innovative and some toxic. Yes, you read that right. Some of them are actually full of nasty toxins and harmful chemicals.

When it comes to toys that go into your little sweetie’s mouth, you should be very picky. You’ll want to make sure that the teether you choose for your baby is non-toxic and won’t leach any chemicals in their little bodies.

Below, is a list of the top 18 non-toxic baby teething toys on the market. But first, let’s talk about those awful toxins.

Teething Toy Safety 101

Your baby’s gum might be itching from growing all those new teeth. But that’s not an excuse for giving your child just about anything to chew on.

Here are a few guidelines for you to keep in mind when getting your baby something to put in their mouth.

1

The Plastic Danger

Because we live in a world where plastic is everywhere, it’s easy to succumb to the idea that plastic is harmless. However, if you’re concerned for your baby’s health, there are some chemicals you need to make sure aren’t in your baby’s toys.

  • BPA (Bisphenol A) – An industrial chemical that is often used in plastic containers that store food and beverages, such as water bottles. Some research has shown that BPA can seep into food or beverages from containers that are made with BPA. Exposure to BPA can have possible health effects on the brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants, and children.
  • PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) –  A commonly used, but very toxic chemical that you want nowhere near your baby. PVC releases carcinogenic Dioxins and other VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), that are extremely hazardous to humans, animals, and the environment.
  • Phthalate – Chemicals that are added to plastics to make them more flexible and pliable. Since these chemicals don’t bond to plastic, they can leak out over time as your baby bite on the toys.

Toys made from PVC is still everywhere. Even though toy manufacturers are aware of these facts, they continue to make toys from PVC, like your baby’s first teething toy, Barbie dolls and even food containers out of dangerous plastic.

The best thing you can do is to keep yourself up to date with the facts and to avoid toxic PVC plastic toys.

Amber Teething Necklace

Amber is a natural resin. As it warms with the body’s natural temperature, amber releases its healing oils (these oils contain succinic acid) which are easily absorbed into the skin and then into the bloodstream.

Wearing an Amber Teething Necklace will, allegedly, help boost your child’s immune system, reduce inflammation and accelerate healing as teething progress.

Many mothers love these necklaces and swear that they work. But they should always be worn under supervision and should not be used as a teething toy.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Product Safety Australia issued a warning on the teething jewelry in 2011.

And according to the Australian Dental Association oral health committee deputy chair Dr. Michael Foley there is no scientific evidence that succinic acid had any pain-relieving properties.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ org has also warned parents not to buy teething necklaces due to the strangulation risk, potential choking hazard and also because there is simply no research to support the necklace’s effectiveness.

Teething Tablets

On September 30, 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration warned parents to stop using homeopathic teething tablets and gels.

The FDA discovered that Hyland’s tablets contain elevated levels of belladonna, which can have life-threatening effects on young children.

These tablets can, among other things, cause seizures, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, skin flushing, constipation, and difficulty urinating.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ org has also warned parents to stay away from teething tablets that contain belladonna and gels with benzocaine.

A
lternatives To Teething Toys

You don’t necessarily need a teething toy. The fact is, that you don’t really need any toys at all for your baby. Most babies are completely happy with whatever is in your kitchen cabinet.

But teething is a painful process for babies and if your baby really is struggling with an aching gum, here’s a few homemade and natural teething pain relievers you can soothe your baby’s sore gums with.

  • Frozen banana – Put a frozen banana slice on your baby’s gums and hold it there for a minute. The cold will numb the pain and as it thaws out, it will become softer and won’t cause discomfort (plus, it tastes good!)
  • Cool spoon Put a spoon in your refrigerator (not the freezer!) for a few hours. Then take it out and put it in your baby’s mouth to ease the pain.
  • Hard biscuits Unsweetened biscuits are great as a pain reliever for your baby when her gums are itching.
  • Fingers Use your own, clean fingers to gently massage your baby’s gum to relieve pain.
  • Brush – A toothbrush for babies is also a great way for a teething baby. Brush gently to relieve pain and then give the toothbrush to your baby to bite on.
