Don’t want to wait 20 weeks to find out the sex of your baby? Here’s how to find out the baby’s gender before the ultrasound!

Ways to find out baby's gender before the ultrasound

One of the most exciting parts of being pregnant is finding out whether you’re having a boy or a girl.

The suspense of finding out your baby’s sex can seem like torture to some, while others prefer to stay in the dark for 40 weeks.

I did not have the patience to wait around for nine whole months before I found out who was living in my womb. Finding out the sex of our child, actually made me feel even closer to my baby.

Choosing a name can feel so much easier when you know the gender of your little one.

It doesn’t even matter if you’re planning on dressing your baby in gender neutral clothes or not, finding out the gender is just exciting!

However, waiting around for the anatomy ultrasound can feel like forever. And even when you get to that point of your pregnancy, your baby might not want to show themselves and their gender.

If you can’t find out the sex of your child when you do the ultrasound, or if you simply feel like you can’t wait around forever (or 20 weeks that is) to find out, there are some non-medical, but of course, non-guaranteed, ways to predict the gender.

How To Find Out The Baby’s Gender Before The Ultrasound

There are a few ways to find out whether you’re having a boy or a girl. There are some scientific ways, a lot of old wives tales, and some other, weird ways of determining the baby’s gender.

An ultrasound scan at your doctor is the most reliable method, but if you simply can’t wait around for that, here are 7 other methods for predicting the gender of your unborn baby:

1

Wedding Ring Test

This method is fun to do at baby shower parties! Take your wedding ring and tie it to a thread or a piece of hair. Lie down and hold the string over your belly.

If the ring moves in a circle, you’re expecting a girl. But if the ring moves back and forth, it’s a boy!

2

Your Skin

There are theories that mean that the extra hormones you have in your body as a result of being pregnant, can give away the answer to whether you’re expecting a boy or a girl.

If you’re carrying a girl, it increases your chances of developing acne and other skin breakouts, while carrying a boy tends not to have that same effect.

3

Your Baby’s Heart Rate

At your OBGYN you can find out your baby’s heart rate. Boys tend to have a heart rate under 140 beats per minute and girls tend to have a heart rate over 140 beats per minute. This was accurate to both my kids!

How You’re Carrying

Your belly might give you the answer to your gender question. If you’re carrying your belly high, you are expecting a girl. If you’re carrying low, you’ll have a boy.

You can also ask someone to look at you from behind. If they can tell that you’re pregnant from behind, chances are you’re having a girl. But if they can’t tell, you’ll have a boy!

5

Cravings

Once again, your belly might give you the answer! If you’re craving sweet foods like chocolate or ice cream, you’re carrying a girl. But if you’re craving salty or sour things, it’s a boy.

Chinese Gender Chart

The Chinese gender chart is about 700 years old and uses the mother’s age at the time of conception and the month of conception to predict the baby’s gender based on the Chinese lunar calendar.

If both your date of birth at conception and conception month are either odd or even – you’ll have a girl. But if only one of the dates are even and the other one is odd, you’ll conceive a boy.

7

The Baking Soda Gender Test

This DIY experiment is another fun way of finding out the gender of your unborn child, and it was accurate for me! Mix a cup of your morning urine with a couple of teaspoons of baking soda. Use a spoon to stir and immediately look in the cup.

Does it bubble? Then it’s a boy.

No reaction? You’re having a girl!
